E3 2012 – The Best Of the Electronic Entertainment Expo

E3 2012

E3 2012 was held at the Los Angeles convention center. For those of you who do not know, E3 is the shortened term for the Electronic Entertainment Expo that is held every year to showcase new hardware and software.

This year, at the show, there has been no new announcement of the next generation consoles for the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. In fact there was no mention of any new hardware. Nintendo’s latest console due for release, the Wii U, was announced last year. For E3 2012 the news was mainly about the forthcoming releases of new games.

Xbox 360 News

Microsoft mainly put out sequels to existing Xbox 360 game titles. The most notable being Halo 4  and Gears of War: Judgement.

Halo 4 promises big multiplayer changes, more brutal melee exchanges, new shield capabilities and new bad guys.

There is another Splinter Cell sequel called Blacklist and Kinect titles Dance Central 3 and Fable The Journey.

PS3 News

Sony have at least 2 crackers coming are way for the PlayStation 3. The Last of Us is a an action adventure game which can be likened to the Uncharted gaming series. This is a violent survival game that definately stands out from the crowd.

Another game to look out for is Beyond: Two Souls. Not too much is known about the game but looks to have a supernatural theme and will feel like a interactive movie.

 

Nintendo Wii U News

There is a possibility that the release date for the Nintendo Wii U is November 2012 but we will still have to wait and see. The console has announced it will also support two gamepads

The games to look forward to are Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros U, Wii Fit U, Lego Undercover City, Zombie U and an updated version of Batman: Arkham City

Multi-platform at E3 2012

There are also multi-platform titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed 3, Crysis 3, Doom 3, Dishonored, Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6 and Star Wars 1313.

One game that did stand out visually at E3, and pencilled in for Xbox 360 and the PS3, was Watch Dogs. Playing the part of a hacker assassin in a futuristic world, this game looks like offering endless possibilities in hacking all manners of different electronic equipment to help complete your goals.

New Video Game Consoles Coming Out

With existing game consoles now having been out for a few years now, new gaming systems are just around the corner.

It is rumoured that the new Xbox coming out (referred to as the Xbox 720) will be in 2013. It is said that the next generation Xbox console will have six times the processing power of the Xbox 360 and have graphics comparable to those seen in the Avatar movie.

The Playstation 4 coming out (PS4) could be as early as the end of 2012 but more likely 2013. This new version is said to offer 3D support and be made of eco-friendly materials. There have been rumours of a 1.5 TB hard drive, USB 3.0 ports, an improved processor and at least 2GB of ram.

As for new Wii coming out, the Wii U is due to be released in 2012. This game console sports a new controller which incorporates a 6.2 inch widescreen touch screen, motion controls and traditional button and analog controls. It also has a front facing camera and will enable you to make video calls on the controller as well. This time round the wii will display full HD graphics. The good news is the wii U will be backward compatible with wii games and accessories.

The PlayStation Vita is the newest handheld game system on the block. This is due for release on 22nd February 2012. The PS Vita comes with front and back touch screens, Wi-Fi integration, GPS, motion sensors and front and rear cameras. It has a 5- inch OLED screen which can display visually striking graphics and an oval design that enables it to fit in your hands comfortably. The PS Vita can play PSP titles, PS one classics, minis, video and comics from the Playstation store.

Launch titles for the Vita include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom, Ridge Racer and Fifa soccer.

Nintendo 3DS

If you are looking for a 3D gaming experience without the glasses then you can look no further than the Nintendo 3DS.

This handheld device was released in 2011 and features dual screens, Wi-Fi and can even allow you to take 3D pictures.

Both 360’s come with built in Wi-Fi and will display true HD graphics at 1080P. They are Kinect ready which is the new controller free device.

Kinect is an infra-red camera add-on designed for the Xbox 360 that brings a more family and accessible gaming experience to the console. For a small subscription, Xbox Live allows you to play games with or against friends and other people online.

The PlayStation 3 (PS3), made by Sony has also gone through different models since release. The latest models are a slimmer and lighter black 160gb and 320gb version. These include built in Wi-Fi, Full HD graphics, a dualshock controller and a blu-ray drive. The PS3 can also allow you to play stereoscopic 3D games and allows you to play online for free. For motion sensing gaming then you can also get the Playstation move. This consists of a controller and a camera that will track your movements.

 

Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii, released in 2006, was the first console to introduce motion control gaming. Though not as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PS3 it offered more emphasis on family fun gaming. Designed more for people of all ages, it is an active and easy to use system and the latest version comes with built in Wi-Fi and is backward compatible with GameCube game titles.
